Craobh Eo Seminar Returns in Style!
The Craobh Eo 2022 Seminar took place on Sat 26th February 2022 in the Gateway Hotel, Swinford.
We were delighted to have two accomplished demonstrators in Joe Laird (Craobh Cúig Déag) and John Flynn (South East Chapter). It proved to be a wonderful day as IWG members from around the country returned following the two year break. The atmosphere on the day was palpable as everyone was delighted to see live turning again.
A brief description of the demonstrations on the day are shown below but definitely visit the Craobh Eo website for in depth demo reports and stunning photos of the day! https://craobheowoodturners.com/project/2022-seminar/
Shamrock Bowl
This was the first of the day for Joe and involved off centre, faceplate and spindle turning.
Accurate marking out of the bowls and off centre points are required to start with. Turn off centre recesses at back for off centre holding and then in turn hollow out each bowl out. Turn the tail then before cleaning up the back.
An 8 Pointed Star with Jig to make it.
Joe followed on with his 8 pointed star demo. This involved making a jig first which in turn would hold the star in different positions as it was turned. Accuracy is the key throughout but the end result is a beautiful star.
Off - Centre Wall Clock
John’s first demo and incorporated off centre turning, texturing and colouring.
A recess is turned to receive the clock followed by texturing all round and ebonising. A verdigree paste is applied on top of the ebonising. Two off centre sections in turn are retextured and coloured to give a lovely finish.
Salt and Pepper Shaker
This is a project with a difference, a salt and pepper shaker without a mechanism for fine salt and pepper. It has a stem going up the middle with a narrow opening going through its centre. Fine salt or pepper is poured in through the opening and got out by shaking up and down. Ingenious. The finish on the outside is stunning.
