Gorey and District - May 2022

Gorey and District had a show and tell meeting for Mays monthly get together. First order of business was to thank Terry Cruise for his years of service as club treasurer. Terry did an exceptional job keeping things running smoothly in the financial department. Six Members got behind the lathe to tell the chapter about how they create their pieces and some great tips and tricks were shared with members.

Paul Kehoe started the show and tell meeting by showing us some of his wonderful art work. Paul explained how he has been heavily influenced in his work from places he has visited around the world.

Next up was Colm Sinnott. Colm showed us a book he uses for inspiration written by Mark Baker, Wood for Woodturners. With the digital age we live in, it was nice to see such great interest in a piece of literature.

Tom Lynch explained how he creates the paint finishes on his pieces using the lathe. Centrifugal painting is a fun process and exploring the different paints and speeds makes for infinite designs. Tom warned that the process can be a messy one if precautions are not taken to restrict the spread of paint around the workshop.

Our wizard of all things mechanical, John Somers, showed some of his creations. Firstly was a turning device that John had built for a woodturner who had one arm. This device gave the turner a new lease of life and lifted many of the restrictions that had been faced. John also had his carving jig which accepts a chick and fits into the banjo. A carvers must have tool for adding further enhancements to any item. Then we had Johns drilling jig. John explained when drilling his clocks, he found the bit would wander due to grain or alignment. This jig makes for very accurate safe drilling.

Tommy Stafford showed us a great variety of his work and explained how he feels, less is more, usually is his best design process to follow. Tommy focuses on the wood and what the wood has to offer for a creative piece of art.

Christien Van Bussel finished off the night with an explanation of how she applies colouring and texture to her pieces. Christien gave a quick demo on apply lime wax to the grain of an Ash picture frame. All of these techniques really wetted our appetite for next month’s demonstration by Christien.

The variety of pieces and techniques covered really provided a lot of food for thought. We look forward to seeing lots of creativity from members in the future.
