Cross Border - February 2022
The February meeting was our first meeting back since the start of the pandemic
The demonstrator was Jim Kelly. Jim's demonstration piece was a Bowl, which was turned from a glue up blank that consisted of two different contrasting varieties of wood - Sycamore and Iroko. The blank was assembled using wedge shaped pieces to form a circle; leaving space in the centre. When a tapered plug is inserted into the centre space, it has the effect of moving the wedges 12° from the vertical. The finished Bowl measured 180mm x 75m
As with a lot of Jim's demonstrations, there is a lot of preparation work involved, and this project was no exception - he had to create a jig for the band saw fence to cut the wedge shapes, and also a jig to run the pieces on a 300mm diameter disc sander.
